The newborn butterfly must begin building its mouthparts as soon as it emerges from its chrysalis or pupal case. It is initially in two sections, and the butterfly must quickly unite it into a single proboscis, or tube-like tongue. Occasionally, you can see a butterfly curling and uncurling it to check that it functions well.
They are obtaining the salts and minerals that mud puddles frequently contain. The male butterflies are more frequently observed doing this, which is known as “puddling,” because they need the minerals for their sperm. The minerals in these nutrients are then sent to the female during mating, where they will help the eggs survive.
