The History of St Patrick’s Day

Saint Patricks Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated annually on March 17th.

The day commemorates Saint Patrick, the most commonly credited patron saint of Ireland. It is also a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Montserrat.

After Ireland became Christianized, the holiday shifted to celebrating the life of Saint Patrick.

Did you know that St Patrick’s Day has been celebrated on March 17th since 1631?

It was first observed as a feast day by Irish immigrants in Boston. Saint Patrick’s Day was made a feast day in the Catholic Calendar of Saints due to the influence of Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding in the early 1600s.
