The idea of Santa Claus falling down the chimney was made popular by the well-known poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” often known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The poem was first printed in 1823 under an alias, and it wasn’t until 1844 that Clement Clark Moore, a professor of Hebrew and Oriental Languages at a bible college, claimed authorship, though some still contest this.

The poem describes Santa Claus coming down the chimney “with a bound,” bringing the gifts and then coming back up the chimney. The poem started to be published yearly in newspapers and journals, and political cartoonist and illustrator Thomas Nast solidified its depiction of Santa Claus with his illustrations of a jovial, bearded guy bringing presents in a sleigh.
