Dino rawrsome facts!

  • Dinosaurs can be classified into two groups based on how their hipbones are constructed. One of the bones in the hips of saurischian, or lizard-hipped, dinosaurs pointed forward. All of the bones in the hips of ornithischian, or bird-hipped, dinosaurs pointed rearward. Ironically, experts think that lizard-hipped dinosaurs—not bird-hipped dinosaurs—were the ancestors of birds.
  • Richard Owen, a British scientist, first used the phrase “dinosaur” in 1842. Instead of conveying that dinosaurs were terrifying, Owen chose the term to refer to their majesty and immensity. It is Greek and means “awful lizard.”
  • Small and light-weight, the earliest dinosaurs debuted 230 million years ago during the Triassic Period. During the Jurassic and Cretaceous eras, larger dinosaurs like Brachiosaurus and Triceratops emerged.
