The jack o lantern costume is a Halloween staple, but did you know the jack o lantern’s origins actually come from an Irish folktale? According to the tale, a man named Jack, who was notorious for his trickster behavior, made a deal with the devil. When Jack eventually died, he wasn’t allowed into either heaven or hell.
As punishment, he was forced to roam the earth with only a single ember to light his way. He placed it inside a carved-out turnip and thus, the jack o lantern was born. In America, pumpkins were more readily available and eventually replaced turnips as the preferred jack o lantern gourd.
And while traditionally jack o lanterns are carved with scary faces, creativity knows no bounds and now everything from cartoon characters to political figures can be found adorning pumpkin patches across the country.
