Did you know that the Grim Reaper didn’t start out as a character with a scythe and hooded cloak?
In fact, he was originally depicted as an ordinary man or angel in European art during the Middle Ages. It wasn’t until the 15th century that artists started portraying him as we know him today – and even then, his scythe didn’t appear until the 18th century. Interestingly enough, Death is also sometimes portrayed as a woman in Europe, known as La Dama de la Muerte or Lady Death.
