Ireland has flown a variety of official and unofficial flags throughout the years. One of the earliest was blue with a gold harp and was in use in the late 15th century. It is currently Ireland’s presidential standard. The St. Patrick’s Cross, which was eventually merged into the British Union Jack, was frequently used in the 17th century. It was linked to both the Fitzgerald family crest and the Spanish Cross of Burgundy. It was white with a red diagonal cross (a red diagonal cross used in Spain since the 8th century).

Even though the country was ruled by England at the time, a green flag with a golden harp that was attributed to the province of Leinster eventually came to be recognized as the flag of Ireland. This was one of the flags flown during the Easter Rising of 1916, which resulted in the founding of the Irish Free State six years later.
