Exclusively available on St. Patrick’s Day, the St. Patrick’s Day Frogs were a specialty that could be found only at Haegele’s Bakery, which is located a block up Barnett Street from our home. The Frogs were a type of amphibian-shaped pastry with cake in the bottom two-thirds and vanilla cream similar to that used to fill creme donuts in the top third. Green fondant was used to cover the cake’s bottom and crème top, and on it were piped icing eyes and a mouth. My mother would buy a St. Patrick’s Day frog for myself, my four siblings, and everyone else every year. Coming home from school to find my St. Patrick’s Day frog was just as exciting for me as opening Christmas morning presents. Those lime-green cake frogs with cream heads were my absolute favorite.
