The public was first introduced to the doll-created character in the 1918 book Raggedy Ann Stories. The idea was a big hit when a doll was sold alongside the book. Her brother Raggedy Andy was first featured in the 1920 sequel Raggedy Andy Stories. Additional characters, including a black mammy doll named Beloved Belindy, appeared as dolls and book characters.
