Did you know that there wouldn’t be any Jetfire without Robotech?

Shockwave wasn’t the only robot in Hasbro’s Transformers toy line who stood out in some way from his fellow robots. Kids were first exposed to Jetfire, a robot with the ability to change into a fighter aircraft, as Starscream’s competition from the Decepticons. However, the toy was eerily bigger and oddly more carefully made than his evil rival. And the explanation is straightforward: Jetfire wasn’t a true Transformer.

Jetfire, in contrast to the Diaclone and Microman toys that made up the first generation of Transformers, debuted as a Super Valkyrie Fighter in the 1982 Japanese television series The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. One of the most recognizable mecha designs of the 1980s was the Super Valkyrie, created by the Japanese toy manufacturer Takatoku. Hasbro bought the toy design from Takatoku, renamed the robot Jetfire, and added it to the Transformers after realizing how well it might be received in the West.
