Sokka was initially meant to be a supporting figure by authors Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. But they decided to give Jack DeSena a much bigger part because they were so taken by his voice-acting abilities. Sokka was left in command after Hakoda left the Southern Water Tribe. He was the only warrior left with the tribe, but he was too young to join his father’s resistance army.
Sokka is both a prankster and a strategist like his father, but we also see a lot of his mother as a protector and a fighter. In the course of the series, Jack DeSena is largely responsible for Sokka’s character development, which is compelling in its own right.
