Ponies and horses are mostly distinguished by their height. Typically, a horse is defined as an equine that is at least 14.2 hands tall, or four feet ten inches. On the other hand, a pony is any horse that is shorter than 14.2 hands (pun entirely intended!).
But this is not a hard-and-fast rule. There are ponies that are higher than 14.2 hands and horses that are smaller than 14.2 hands. Why? The explanation is that, in addition to being shorter than horses, ponies also differ from horses in other significant ways.
