Nightmares, also known as hell horses or demon horses, were evil equines named after the terrifying dreams that their victims experienced. They were evil entities that were primarily known for being used as mounts by a variety of evil beings in the Lower realms. Nightmares were stallions with night-black coats, standing about six feet (1.8 meters) tall at the shoulders. However, closer inspection revealed that their warhorse-like exterior was only a cover.
They emitted orange fire when their nostrils flared, had enormous heads, viper-like fangs, and dark, menacing eyes that were frequently lit by scorching, red flames. Although they were covered in flames and had wild manes and unruly tails, when they died, they soon dispersed into cinders.
