The okapi, also referred to as the “forest giraffe,” is a near relative of the giraffe but resembles a cross between a deer and a zebra in appearance. Only the jungle of the Congo is home to the uncommon okapi. As a result, the role of Melman was altered to that of a giraffe because it is a more recognizable animal.
Additionally, Melman’s personality more closely resembled that of a giraffe, according to the Madagascar Wiki, which led to his transition into the taller species. However, later in the film series, in Madly Madagascar, a female Okapi catches Marty’s attention.
