The short-lived doujinshi Beast Complex introduced the world of Legoshi and Haru before their romance blossomed into the award-winning sleeper smash Beastars. Beast Complex is a collection of ten short stories portraying various animal characters going about their regular lives. This was the pitch Itagaki made to Weekly Shonen Champion, and it persuaded them to immediately start serializing Beastars.
Beast Complex and Beastars are similar in many ways. Both emphasize interspecies connections while demonstrating how anthropomorphic animals would live in the modern world (both romantic and otherwise). Recently, it was announced that Beast Complex will return. This time, it would center on the residents of Legoshi’s Hidden Condo. However, because he was made so long ago, Legoshi himself is older than Beast Complex.
