Given the subject matter of the program, it should come as no surprise that Stephen Hillenburg, the man behind the SpongeBob SquarePants series and its characters, majored in marine science and minored in art. Hillenburg’s obsession with the ocean and his love of sketching intensified as he grew older, which is why the show is the ideal fusion of the two. At Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, he earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resource planning with a focus on marine resources in 1984.
Stephen Hillenburg was an educator at the Ocean Institute in California, formerly the Orange County Marine Institute, and he also enjoyed sketching.
