Fun Fact!
The 1989 manga of the same name by Aoi Hiiragi, released by Shueisha, served as the inspiration for the movie. Hayao Miyazaki wrote the screenplay. This is the sole movie directed by Yoshifumi Kond, who passed away in 1998 at the age of 47 from a ruptured aneurysm, and the first theatrical Studio Ghibli film not to be made by Miyazaki or Takahata. Kond had been tipped by Studio Ghibli to succeed Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. The surrealist painter Naohisa Inoue and I worked together for the first time on this project.
