Hasbro required assistance in getting Takara’s incredible robots, which could take on the appearance of trains, cars, and planes, ready for the American market after it had acquired the rights to them. They particularly wanted assistance in coming up with cool new names for the individuals who would serve as the leaders of the warring robot factions of the Transformers. Hasbro requested assistance from Marvel Comics during this delicate toyline development phase.
In response, writers Denny O’Neil and Bob Budiansky from Marvel as well as then-editor-in-chief Jim Shooter answered the phone. Optimus Prime’s moniker was devised by O’Neil, while Megatron’s moniker was developed by Budiansky.
