The characters in Bungou Stray Dogs, according to Kafka Asagiri, were based on a number of authors, both Japanese and foreign. Atsushi, who has an optimistic outlook on life, was meant to be the total antithesis of Dazai. Dazai, on the other hand, consistently makes suicide attempts and is a lot funnier. Given Dazai’s propensity for suicide, Harukawa, the illustrator, depicts him with bandages covering the majority of his body.
