Araki originally considered letting Joseph die because he believed Joseph had too many clichés, despite Joseph being by far the most popular Joestar prior to Part 3. He had managed to conquer Hamon in less than a week, had single-handedly vanquished each of the game’s three main antagonists in a 1v1 match, and was always able to predict others’ lines.
Joseph had received too much plot armor, in his opinion, and he didn’t like the thought of a character having too many advantages and surviving so easily. However, Araki’s current favorite character was Joseph, who was also unquestionably the most well-liked at the time. Therefore, Araki made the decision to use a cunning plan of his own to make Joseph’s “death” a lie.
