It sounds like Princess Mononoke is a nice foreign family movie. And based on director Hayao Miyazaki’s prior successes, such as Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro, that would be a reasonable assumption. Princess Mononoke, though, wasn’t cute or innocent. The violent story of Ashitaka, an exiled prince attempting to mediate between warring animals and humans, was a significant change for Miyazaki from his earlier works. When it debuted in 1997, it was also his most financially and critically successful film to date.
