Particularly following the events of World War 2, Japan made the decision to break away from its Shinto heritage. Despite the fact that Japan had already been “modernizing” for almost a century at that point, the end of the war and the collapse of the Japanese Empire marked the beginning of the country’s significant transition towards becoming the industrialized, capitalistic country it is today.
Miyazaki is not a fan of any of this and has used Princess Mononoke to express his opposition to Japan’s industrialization. Before Japan deviates too much from its natural heritage and traditions, he wants to remind the Japanese people of them.
