The movie’s anti-war stance was vehemently disputed by director Isao Takahata. Takahata had sought to create an idea of the brother and sister having a failing existence due to isolation from society and invoke pity, particularly in individuals in their teens and twenties, but admitted that “[The film] is not at all an anti-war animation and has absolutely no such message.”
When the movie poster is illuminated, some of the lights are actually incendiary bombs dropped by a B-25 bomber, not fireflies.
