The movie’s distribution in South Korea was postponed indefinitely due to worries that it inadvertently defended Japan’s involvement in World War II.
The only animator still alive who had worked on the project and survived the bombings was Isao Takahata.
The company that created the fruit drops that Setsuko consumes is called Sakuma Confectionary Company, and it was actually founded in 1949. (four years after the events in this movie took place). Sakuma previously produced limited-edition tin cans that mirrored the ones from the film. Some of these tins also featured an image of Setsuko searching for the last drop in her container.
